HSP Puppy Program

HSP has found an innovative way to give back to our community while helping our canine friends. Many times animal shelters must put mother dogs to sleep if they come to the shelter pregnant. This is done in an effort to control the population of unwanted puppies.

HSP has partnered with several of the local shelters to adopt these momma dogs, help them re-establish health, and deliver the puppies at our facility. The puppies are then hand raised, with daily socialization for much of the day.

HSP has designed a program that allows the puppies to be safely introduced to multiple exercises that allow the puppies to be desensitized to new textures, temperatures, noises, enviroments, etc from the time they are 24 hrs old. With these exercises, the puppies are better able to adjust in a shorter period of time as they mature. The exercises also stimulate mental growth at a higher rate than average and allows for a better temperament.

Often times, due to the momma dog's less than perfect health, the mother's milk must be supplemented with bottle feeding. This allows for better nutrition and health of the puppies. The puppies start their "official" training in public at 8wks of age.

With the use of the above HSP program techniques, we are able to use 80% or more of a litter. Puppies that would have otherwise have been euthanized become fantastic service dogs, helping human partners who love and value them. It is a win-win situation.

Once the puppies are weaned, the momma dog is spayed and trained to be placed in a nursing home or children's group home as a therapy dog. Puppies who cannot complete the program successfully are adopted out to homes on a waiting list and closely monitored.

One litter in the HSP program is pictured below. We will post pictures on a routine basis so you can see them grow up, go through training, into service, and partner with their humans.
